Venezuela: President Nicolás Maduro Survives Assassination Attempt

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro survived an assassination attempt on Saturday when drones laden with explosives detonated as he was delivering a speech to a huge gathering of soldiers in the capital city of Caracas.

The speech was being telecast live and footages show President Maduro, His wife and top officials caught in surprise. His bodyguards are seen making a circle around him and ushering him out. Viral images show bodyguards surrounding Maduro with a black barrier, apparently an armored one.

Shortly after the incident, Maduro claimed that it was an attempt to assassinate him. Video footages show two back to back explosions, both carried out via drones.

Images tweeted by Venezuelan show several soldiers being injured in the explosion.

As per reports, President Maduro has accused the ‘ultra-right’ working in coordination with the Colombian far-right. He has also named Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, the recipient of 2016 Nobel Peace Prize.

Reports suggest that the firefighters present at the venue have refuted the government’s version of the event and claimed that the sound and smoke was from a gas explosion, not far from the venue where Maduro spoke.

The Government of Venezuela has often accused the anti-Maduro activists of trying to sabotage the government by assassinating the President.
