US Govt Shuts Down: Senate Fails To Pass Bill Within Deadline

The United States government shut down at Friday midnight as the senators failed to reach a deal over immigration and spending before the deadline. To prevent the agencies from shutting down, 60 votes were needed to overcome a procedural hurdle.

However, the Senate Democrats blocked the bill during last-minute negotiations by producing 49 votes against the cause while only 50 were in favour. Notably, five Democrats were willing to end the debate but the four Republicans ended up biting their mates by voting against them.

In an attempt to win acknowledgement for young undocumented immigrants and an extension of DACA, an Obama-era program protecting some young immigrants from deportation expiring in March, Democrats ended up contributing to the US shutdown. Republicans, however, tried to seek more time to reach the deal but Democrats refused.

The shutdown, which re-occurred after 5 years, will partially curb government operations as the uniformed service members, health inspectors, and law enforcement officers will be forced to work without pay. The development will affect Social Security and most other safety net programs the least.

Calling the Democrats ‘obstructionist losers’, the White House issued an official statement blaming them for blocking a bill and leading to the Schumer Shutdown. In order to punish them for politicising the matter, the President has now refused to negotiate on their key demand pertaining to their unlawful immigrants.
