The United States which has had strained relations with Iran since with it withdrew from the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal in May, on Tuesday blamed Iran for attacks by 'its proxies' in Iraq and warned that it would respond swiftly and decisively on further attacks.

"Over the past few days, we have seen life-threatening attacks in Iraq, including on the United States consulate in Basra and against the American embassy compound in Baghdad," the White House said in a statement.

"Iran did not act to stop these attacks by its proxies in Iraq, which it has supported with funding, training, and weapons," it continued.

"The United States will hold the regime in Tehran accountable for any attack that results in injury to our personnel or damage to United States Government facilities.  America will respond swiftly and decisively in defense of American lives," the White House statement said.

On September 7, in the ultra-secure green zone in Baghdad, which houses Iraqi authorities and the US Embassy, 3 mortal shells were fired, but did not cause any casualties or damage, Iraqi officials said. In Basra on September 8, unknown assailants fired Katyusha rockets at the airport which also houses the US consulate.

US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the Iran Nuclear Deal on May 8, reimposing sanctions on the nation as well as announcing sanctions on nations that would continue to deal with Iran. Meanwhile, Iran has been attempting to circumvent the sanctions by reaching out to other nations, including India and the European Union encouraging them to continue dealing with it.

In the face of increased sanctions from the US, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani cautioned US President Donald Trump against pursuing 'hostile policies' towards Tehran, saying "America should know ... war with Iran is the mother of all wars."

Trump responded by tweeting, "To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!"
