United States Expels 60 Russian Diplomats, Shuts Down Seattle Consulate

US President Donald Trump on Monday expelled 60 Russian Diplomats and has shut down the Russian Consulate based in Seattle.

Interestingly the United States administration is terming these diplomats as spies. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders in a statement said that the action was taken because of the Seatle consulate’s proximity to one of United States’ submarine bases and Boeing.

The decision comes in response an attack of a former Russian spy in the U.K. by a nerve agent. The United Kingdom has recently expelled dozens of Russian diplomats followed by an equal and opposite reaction from Moscow expelling British diplomats.

Sanders said, “The United States takes this action in conjunction with our NATO allies and partners around the world in response to Russia’s use of a military grade chemical weapon on the soil of the United Kingdom, the latest in its ongoing pattern of destabilizing activities around the world.”

The United States believes that expelling these diplomats will reduce Russia’s ability to spy on Americans and to conduct any operation that could become a threat to the US National Security.

“With these steps, the United States and our allies and partners make clear to Russia that its actions have consequences,” Sanders further stated.
