Two Tourist Planes Crash Within Hours In The Swiss Alps

Several people are feared dead after two planes crashed one after the other in separate accidents within hours in the Swiss Alps on Saturday.

Both the planes were light aircraft. The first aircraft was carrying 4 tourists, a couple and two young children. It crashed in a forest on the Nidwald canton area. The plane burst into flames within minutes of the accident and caused a huge fire in the forest. Authorities had to press a helicopter in action to douse the flames before sending rescue workers at the spot. All aboard the plane are feared dead.

The second accident too involved a tourist plane that crashed within hours of the first accident. The second plane crashed into the 3000 metres high Piz Segnas in the Glarus Alps. The plane had a capacity of 17 passengers and had 2 crew members. The exact number of passengers in the second plane is not clear as of now.

The second plane was a Junker JU-52, owned and operated by the JU-AIR company based in Dübendorf, which specialises in sightseeing flights. As per media reports, the plane was a 1939 vintage model.

A JU-AIR statement posted on the company website reads, “A JU-Air Ju-52 crashed on Saturday, August 4. The JU-Air team is deeply saddened and thinks of the passengers, the crew and families and friends of the victims. The canton police has set up a helpline for relatives: 081 256 56 56. The flight operations of JU-Air is suspended until further notice.”

As per reports, 5 helicopters were pressed into the rescue operation.
