TIME magazine on Wednesday named "The silence breakers" as its Person of the Year.

"The Silence Breakers" designates a broad range of people, mostly women, from this year's first public accusers of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to people who shared their stories of abuse using the hashtag #MeToo and its foreign language equivalents.

According to the magazine the hashtag #MeToo (and its foreign equivalent), which to date has provided an umbrella of solidarity for millions of people to come forward with their stories, is part of the picture, but not all of it.

TIME's editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal announced the pick and said “This is the fastest moving social change we've seen in decades."

"These silence breakers have started a revolution of refusal, gathering strength by the day, and in the past two months alone, their collective anger has spurred immediate and shocking results: nearly every day, CEOs have been fired, moguls toppled, icons disgraced. In some cases, criminal charges have been brought", he added.

US President Donald Trump was the first runner up while Chinese President Xi Jinping was the second runner up.
