Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina advised India not to worry about Dhaka’s growing ties with China. Interacting with a delegation of visiting Indian journalists at her official residence on Tuesday, she said Bangladesh's relations with Beijing are being extended only for the development of the country.

“I will rather suggest India should have good relations with its neighbours, including Bangladesh, so this region could be developed further and we can show the world that we all work together,” Sheikh Hasina said.

“We want investment and cooperation from whoever offers it. We want development of the country. We have to think about our people as they are the beneficiaries of the development,” she added.

She said China had agreed to provide 9 billion dollars as a loan to Bangladesh on very low interest.

Interacting with the Indian journalists, Hasina said, “the relationship between India and Bangladesh has always been excellent. Both countries have resolved the border and maritime disputes with understanding.“

Sheikh Hasina also sought India’s support in the repatriation of Rohingyas refugees to Myanmar, fearing that their prolonged stay in Bangladesh could create security risks. She said, “We want India to put pressure on Myanmar so they quickly take back their displaced people.”

Putting emphasis on the China-Bangladesh relations, Hasina told the media that China has said to enhance military and defence relations with Bangladesh including six rail projects, one close to the Indian border.
