Russian Embassy In US Runs Twitter Poll : Which US Consulate Would You Close In Russia

The Russian Embassy in Washington ran a Twitter poll asking its followers to vote for US consulate which they would like to shut down. This comes a day after the Trump administration announced it would close down the Russian consulate in Seattle and expel 60 diplomats calling them spies.

The poll has American consulates in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg as the options.

US President Donald Trump on Monday expelled 60 Russian Diplomats and has shut down the Russian Consulate based in Seattle because of its proximity to a submarine base and expel the diplomats for 'aggressive' intelligence collection.

The decision comes in response an attack of a former Russian spy in the U.K. by a nerve agent. The United Kingdom has recently expelled dozens of Russian diplomats followed by an equal and opposite reaction from Moscow expelling British diplomats.

In the 18 hours that the poll has been online, over 52,229 people have already voted, with the US consulate in St Petersburg receiving the most votes.

In response to Trump's expulsions, Moscow has already promised tit-for-tat measures.

The Russian embassy has a history of using humour, sharp rhetoric and the occasional snarky retort on their social media accounts.

Earlier this month, the embassy posted a picture of a helicopter over their building in Northwest DC, writing, "What was American helicopter searching for at the Russian Embassy's premises yesterday night? 'Strange' malfunction of navigation equipment in the centre of the US capital? Or another desperate attempt to find traces of #RussianMeddling?"
