PTI Founding Member Dr Arif Alvi, Son Of Jawaharlal Nehru's Dentist, Elected Pakistan President

Dr Arif Alvi, one of the founding members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party whose leader Imran Khan was recently sworn-in as the nation's Prime Minister, was on Tuesday elected as the new President of Pakistan and will assume office on September 9. He is the son of Dr Habib ur Rehman Elahi Alvi who was previously dentist to India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The 69-year-old former dentist Alvi defeated Pakistan Peoples Party candidate Aitzaz Ahsan and the Pakistan Muslim League-N candidate Maulana Fazl ur Rehman to become the 13th President of Pakistan.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, a total of 1,110 voters participated in the presidential polls which were held simultaneously at the Parliament House and the four provincial assembles on Tuesday. From the total votes, 27 were declared invalid, Alvi won 353 votes, Rehman won 185, and Ahsan secured 124.

The new Pakistan President Arif Alvi in his victory speech said, "I am grateful to God that the PTI-nominated candidate has been successful in the presidential race today," adding, "I am also thankful to Imran Khan for nominating me for such a big responsibility."

Alvi said that in his impending five-year term, he hopes that the "fortunes of the poor" take a turn for the better, and that they get "food, shelter and clothing".

"From today I am not just a president that was nominated by the PTI but I am the president of the entire nation and all parties," said Alvi.

"Each party has an equal right on me," he added.

Alvi began his political career when he was a student of de'Montmonrency College of Dentistry in Lahore, by joining the students' wing of Jamaat-i-Islami and contested elections in 1979 but lost, later leaving the party and politics in 1988.

Inspired by Imran Khan, Alvi became one of the founding members of the PTI in 1996 and helped in writing the Constitution of the party as well, becoming the Secretary-General of the party from 2006 till 2013. In 2013, Alvi was elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from Karachi and re-elected in July 2018.
