Pakistan: PML-N Elects Nawaz Sharif as Quaid For Life After SC Removes Him From Party President Post

The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leadership on Tuesday elected Nawaz Sharif as the party’s leader for life. The decision was taken in a meeting called to choose an interim party President following the Supreme Court judgment that removed Nawaz Sharif as the party chief.

The proposal was proposed by the party Chairman Raja Zafrul Haque and was endorsed by the entire CWC of the PML-N. Endorsing the proposal, Prime Minister Khaqan Abbasi said that this was a decision of the people of Pakistan and the courts had no right to interfere.

Sharif was disqualified from the position of the Prime Minister after the Supreme Court found him guilty and dishonest in the Panama Papers controversy for not disclosing his employment with FZE Capital.

According to the party’s rules, the PML-N’s CWC is supposed to elect an acting party head within a week of its chief’s removal. The party’s General Council is then required to elect a President within forty-five days. During the meeting, Nawaz Sharif proposed the name of Shahbaz Sharif as acting President of the party. Shahbaz was elected unopposed.

Since the Supreme Court had nullified all the decisions taken by Nawaz Sharif as party chief, only those CWC members who were elected before the July 28 decision had been called for Tuesday’s meeting.
