Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to a 10 years imprisonment on Friday in the Avenfield properties reference while his daughter Maryam was sentenced for seven years in the jail.

The accountability court on Friday pronounced Sharif, his daughter Maryam, and son-in-law Captain Safdar guilty in the Avenfield corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the Supreme Court's directives in the landmark Panamagate verdict last year.

According to local media reports, Judge Muhammad Bashir of the accountability court read out the 100-page verdict. The historic decision was to be announced earlier, but after multiple delays, the court announced the verdict in the presence of media personnel at 4:20.

The counsel for the Sharif family had submitted applications in the accountability court seeking a week's delay in the announcement of the verdict in the Avenfield case. Bur the court denied the plea and announced the verdict later in the day

NAB had registered three references against members of the Sharif family; Avenfield properties, Al-Azizia and Hill Metal Establishment, and Flagship Investment.

The Pakistan Supreme Court, on July 28, had disqualified Sharif from holding the office of the prime minister and asked the National Accountability Bureau to file references against the Sharif family in connection with corruption cases against them in connection to the cases which came in light through the Panama Papers.
