A 24-year-old man in Pakistan has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of 7-year-old Zainab Ansari, local police said on Tuesday. The body of Zainab was found in a garbage dumpster in the Kasur district near Lahore on January 9, raped and murdered, triggering protests across Pakistan and demands of government action.

Shahbaz Sharif, the Chief Minister of the Punjab province in Pakistan where Kasur district is located, identified 24-year-old Imran Ali as the killer and rapist of Zainab in an address to media.

“I want Imran Ali to be hanged publicly ... I will request the political parties to support my wish,” Sharif said.

Sharif added that Ali, a resident of Kasur district, confessed to the murder of Zainab and that his DNA matched samples found on her body.  Nearly 1,150 other DNA samples had also been tested apart from Ali's. A Pakistan police official speaking anonymously said that the accused had confessed to multiple murders and was also suspected of raping and killing at least 7 other girls.

Regional police officer Zulfiqar Hameed said to Reuters that Ali was one of Zainab’s neighbours and CCTV footage from the day of her abduction showed her walking off calmly with Ali.

The rape and murder of Zainab marked the 12th such incident in a year, leading to extensive protests in Pakistan and the death of 2 people in the Kasur district when police fired at hundreds of angry protesters who said that government negligence was behind the repeated incidents.
