Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador 'AMLO' Wins Presidential Elections In Mexico

Veteran Leftist leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has won the Presidential elections in Mexico. Obrador who projected himself as the agent of change secured a thumping victory on Monday receiving an estimated 53% of the total votes polled which is more than twice the votes polled by his nearest rival.

Declaring his victory amid a wave of cheering supporters in Mexico City, AMLO said, "Today, they have recognized our victory."

Obrador, also known by the initials of his name AMLO was a clear favourite in the elections. He held a 20-point lead over his rivals in the run-up to the polls. His rivals conceded defeat within hours of the polling.

Lopez Obrador will formally be sworn in on December 1, when he will take the reign of the South American nation from incumbent President Enrique Peña Nieto who has pledged a smooth transition.

Obrador has vowed to forge a new relationship with the United States based on mutual respect and in defense of the migrant Mexican population who are working in the United States. He also promised to strengthen the internal markets so that Mexicans have a choice to live and work in their own country instead of being forced to migrate.

Other important issues that he addressed during his speech are talking violence and massive corruption, fighting social and economic inequality, and peace plan with the US and UN.

US President Donald Trump took to twitter congratulating Obrador. He wrote, “Congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on becoming the next President of Mexico. I look very much forward to working with him. There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!”
