Canada on Wednesday legalized the possession and use of cannabis for recreational purpose. It became the second such country in the world after Uruguay to allow the recreational use of cannabis.

While medical marijuana is already legal in Canada, the drug is being legalized under the Cannabis Act, which is set to take effect from October 17.

According to media reports, no bar or restaurants will sell the drug and it will be legally sold only in government stores in some provinces while some provinces will have it privately sold. It's worth noting that legal marijuana will be low on THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

Adults will be able buy cannabis oil, seeds and plants and dried cannabis from licensed producers and retailers and to possess up to 30 grams (one ounce) of dried cannabis in public, or its equivalent.

It will be illegal to possess more than 30 grams in public, grow more than four plants per household and to buy from an unlicensed dealer. Someone caught selling the drug to a minor could be jailed for up to 14 years.

According to local media reports, Government officials told reporters on Tuesday that they are currently considering a fast-track process to allow people who have been convicted of possession to apply for legal pardons. There are currently some 500,000 Canadians with existing criminal records for possession.

After the legalization of cannabis, people went on to celebrate the move on Twitter.
