Fidel Castro 's Oldest Son 'Fidelito' Commits Suicide Due To 'Deep Depression'

Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, the eldest son of the late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, committed suicide on Thursday allegedly due to long-running depression. He had been battling depression for months and was being treated by doctors before his death.

Also known as 'Fidelito', he was a nuclear scientist and had a complicated relationship with his father after his father once fired him publicly.

At the time of his Fidelito's death, he was 68-years-old and was the most publically known child of Fidel Castro. People used to call him 'Little Fidel' because he had such a resemblance to his father.

He was also the subject of a dramatic custody dispute between the two families as a child.  

Cuban scholars say his mother took him with her to the United States when he was aged five after announcing she wanted a divorce from Castro. Castro brought him back to Cuba after the revolution of 1959.

Castro Diaz- Balart was head of Cuba's national nuclear program from 1980 to 1992, and spearheaded the development of a nuclear plant on the Caribbean's largest island from where his father fired him.

At the time of his death, Fidelito was the Vice-President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and had been working for his uncle President Raul Castro as a scientific counsellor to the Cuban Council of State.

Fidelito’s death comes just over a year after that of his father on November 25, 2016, at age 90.
