Donald Trump-Vladimir Putin Bilateral Summit To Be In Helsinki

The bilateral summit between United States’ President Donald J Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be held on 16 July in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. This was confirmed by Kremlin and the White House on Thursday.

Both Moscow and Washington announced the venue at the same time. This comes a day after Trump announced that a meeting would be held after the NATO summit in July. He had also stated that Helsinki could be a possible venue.

In a statement, the White House said, “The two leaders will discuss relations between the United States and Russia and a range of national security issues.”

A statement from the Kremlin read, “As it was agreed, Vladimir Putin and President of the United States of America Donald Trump will have a meeting in Helsinki on July 16. The two presidents will discuss Russian-US relations and their further development, as well as current international matters.”

John Bolton, the United States National Security Advisor met with President Vladimir Putin and other senior Russian officials on Wednesday to discuss the potential for a presidential meeting on Wednesday following which both sides confirmed the meeting.

During the meeting, Putin offered to share Russia’s experiences and expertise of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018 to the United States when they host the 2026 World Cup.

This will be the first formal summit between the two world leaders. The summit is important because this comes on the sidelines of the NATO summit. Trump has been asking NATO leaders to contribute more to the alliance. The meeting becomes important in light of the allegations of Russian interference in the US Presidential elections. While Trump has always rejected these allegations and has been vocal on the issue, the timing of his last tweet on the same seems strategic and in tune with the announcement of the bilateral summit.

“Russia continues to say they had nothing to do with Meddling in our Election! Where is the DNC Server, and why didn’t Shady James Comey and the now disgraced FBI agents take and closely examine it? Why isn’t Hillary/Russia being looked at? So many questions, so much corruption!” he tweeted.

Speaking to reporters at the White House Trump said, “I think we'll be talking about Syria, I think we'll be talking about Ukraine. I think we'll be talking about many other subjects. And we'll see what happens. So you never know."
