US President Donald Trump on Wednesday confirmed via Twitter that the CIA chief Mike Pompeo made a secret trip to the North Korean capital of Pyongyang to meet Kim Jong Un. As per Trump, the meeting went well and a good relationship was formed between the two parties.

Trump will soon become the first serving American President to meet a North Korean leader. None of his predecessors ever met their North Korean counterparts and the two nations do not even have formal diplomatic relationships.

The talks are a result of recent developments following the Winter Olympics. Before that, the relationship between two nations had been perennially sour. Trump had been issuing threats and ultimatums to the North Korean leadership till late February which Kim Jong Un reciprocated in equal terms.

Six weeks ago Trump tweeted saying possible progress was being made in talks with North Korea with serious efforts from all parties. This came a week after Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo-Jong met South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Incidentally, Ivanka Trump too had visited the Winter Olympics at the same time.

In the same week, Trump said that the deal with North Korea was in pipelines and will be a good one for the world stating that the time and place for the meeting was being decided. He also commended North Korean leadership for not conducting any missile test since November 2017.

Mike Pompeo has been handpicked by Trump to become his Secretary of State replacing Rex Tillerson. Pompeo faces Senate conformational hearing. White House Spokesperson Sarah Sanders took this development as an opportunity to seek democrat support for his candidature. Quote tweeting Trump, she wrote, “Nothing could better underscore the importance of getting America's top diplomat in place for such a time as this. Dems have an opportunity to put politics aside, acknowledge our national security is too important, and confirm Mike Pompeo. Statesmanship.”
