The top court of Bangladesh on Wednesday upheld the bail given to Bangladesh Nationalist Party Supremo and Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia given by the High Court. Zia is serving a five-year prison term in a corruption case. The Sheikh Hasina Government and the Bangladesh Anti Corruption Commission had opposed her interim bail in the supreme court.

As per reports, this bail will not entitle Zia to walk out of prison as her bail pleas in six other cases were yet to be delivered. Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Joynal Abedin appeared optimist and said that they expect to secure bail in other cases as well.

A four member bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain heard her bail plea.

Zia has challenged her conviction and the five-year jail term in the Orphanage Trust corruption case in the high court. The apex court directed the High Court to hear her petition and positively dispose of it by the end of July.

A special court had in February this year sentenced Khaleda Zia, her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others for embezzlement of funds meant for Zia Orphanage Trust. They were accused of embezzling close to 252,000 dollars from donations meant for charity. The Zia orphanage trust is named after Khaleda’s husband and Former President of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman.
