George Herbert Walker Bush, who served as the 41st American President from the year 1989 to 1993 died at the age of 94.

According to media reports, the death of Bush was announced in a statement released late Friday.

"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died," his son, said in a statement released by family spokesman Jim McGrath.

Bush had a form of Parkinson’s disease that forced him to use a wheelchair or motorized scooter in recent years, and he had been in and out of hospitals during that time as his health declined.

In April, he was admitted to a hospital intensive care unit with an infection, a week after the death of his wife Barbara, to whom he was married for 73 years.

The last veteran of World War II to serve as president, he was a consummate public servant and a statesman who helped guide the US and the world out of a four-decade Cold War that had carried the threat of nuclear annihilation and forged a global coalition to oust Iraqi forces from Kuwait.

George W. Bush called his father a "man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for," in a statement announcing his death.

Former President Barack Obama said: "America has lost a patriot and humble servant in George Herbert Walker Bush. While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude.”
