At least 17 people, including students and teachers, were killed in a shooting at a high school in Florida, US, after a 19-year-old gunman opened fire on Wednesday before he was arrested by the police.

According to reports, the gunman, identified as Nikolas Cruz, before he began shooting pulled the fire alarm in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, in an attempt to get more people to come out of the classrooms and increase the fatality numbers.

Coincidently, earlier the same day, a fire drill had taken place resulting in students and teachers thinking it was a false alarm, reported CNN. The school went into lockdown mode, with students hiding in closets, while others attempted to flee.

The gunman Nikolas Cruz was expelled from the school for unspecified disciplinary reasons, the Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said at a news briefing, adding that Cruz surrendered to the police without a struggle.

From the 17 fatalities, 12 were killed inside the school building, 2 were killed just outside, 1 was killed on the street and 2 died from injuries at the hospital. Sheriff Scott Israel added that the victims comprised a mix of students and adults.

US President Donald Trump expressed his condolences on the shooting in a tweet, saying "My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school."

The Florida shooting marks the 18th such incident of shooting on US school premises in this year, the gun control group Everytown For Gun Safety said.
