At least 12 people have been killed, including a baby, after a massive fire broke out in a New York City apartment building in the Bronx area of the city. At least 4 others are in critical condition, while others were able to get out through the fire escape.

New York Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Niger called the fire "historic in its magnitude", adding that it was too early to determine the cause of the fire.

The fire started on the first floor of the apartment building before it spread and the fire department was able to respond to the emergency calls within 3 minutes.

More than 160 firefighters were brought in to extinguish the fire which is said to be under control.

"Tonight here in the Bronx, families have been torn apart," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said to media, terming the incident as the "worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city."
