One person was killed and 4 fire fighters were injured after a fire broke out in an apartment on the 50th floor of the Trump Tower in New York City on Saturday.

The victim was a 67-year-old man who was a resident of the building's 50th floor and was found unconscious and unresponsive when fire fighters pulled him out, the New York Police Department said. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and succumbed to his injuries later on,  although the medical examiner's office would determine the exact cause of death.

The fire was contained to the 50th floor of the Trump Tower, located on New York's fifth avenue, and was ruled under control by the New York City Fire Department around 2 hours after it was reported.

"This was a very difficult fire. As you can imagine, the apartment is quite large, we are 50 stories up. The rest of the building had a considerable amount of smoke," the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro added that no members of US President Donald Trump's family were at the tower during the fire.

Confirming that the fire was put out, President Trump thanked the firemen (and women) in a tweet, "Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!"

The Trump Tower is a 58-storey high mixed-use skyscraper in New York City which serves as the headquarters for the Trump Organisation as well as the penthouse condominium residence of US President Donald Trump who was a businessman and real estate developer when the tower was built.
