The WhatsApp mobile phone messenger has become an integral part of life in modern times, whether it is to chat with friends and family, or discuss office tasks. Even a temporary outage of the popular chatting network is enough to put a hamper into the lifestyles of people.

On New Year's Eve, when people from across the world wait for the stroke of midnight to wish their loved ones, the WhatsApp services tragically went down, reportedly as the platform could not handle the traffic.

"WhatsApp users around the world experienced a brief outage today that has now been resolved”, a WhatsApp spokeswoman said in an emailed statement, although the cause of the outage was not immediately known.

The WhatsApp outage took place at 12:10 AM in various areas of Europe, India, Asia and South America but was restored by 1:00 AM. However, India marks the biggest market of WhatsApp with around 200 million users.

As WhatsApp services went down, the public took to Twitter to share their concerns.

In the year 2017, WhatsApp services faced global outages in May, September and November as well.
