On 46th Indian Navy Day, Nation Pays Tributes To The Sentinels Of The Seas

Over the last 70 years, the Indian Navy has grown magnificently in terms of power and reach and is fully capable in all three dimensions; on, above and below water, with most of the ships being indigenously built.

From a force with less than 6 sloops to a reckonable force with 135 ships, Naval satellites, Electronic warfare and systems management, weapon systems and submarines the Indian Navy has made the nation proud.

On December 4 in 1971, the Indian Navy became famous after it played a significant role in the bombing of the Karachi harbour in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. In an attack known as Operation Trident which was launched on December 4, the Indian Navy used anti-ship missiles for the first time in the region.

The date December 4 became known as Navy Day in India and became a day to honour and celebrate the powerful Indian Navy as well as all the sacrifices made by the Navy personnel.
