Nation Remembers Lal Bahadur Shastri On 52nd Death Anniversary

The second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on the same date as the great Mahatma Gandhi, on October 2, 1904 and died on January 11, 1966 in Uzbekistan a day after signing the Tashkent Declaration, reportedly due to cardiac arrest.

A great leader of the Congress party, Shastri was the first person to be awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously. Impressed and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Shastri joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s and joined the cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, after the independence.

Famous for the slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" ("Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer"), Shastri led the nation during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. Although his death has been shrouded in mystery, his contributions to the nation have never been forgotten.
