Women across Iran have rallied in support of a teenaged Iranian girl identified as Maedeh Hojabri who was arrested simply for posting a video of herself dancing on Instagram. Other women gave their support to Maedeh by posting their own videos of themselves dancing.

According to reports, Maedeh Hojabri, with an Instagram following of 53,000, was one of a number of users having popular Instagram accounts who have been arrested. However, the identities of the other detainees have not yet been made public.

Forced to appear on a state television programme with other detainees, Maedeh defended that she did not make the video to attract attention.

“It wasn’t for attracting attention,” she said. “I had some followers and these videos were for them. I did not have any intention to encourage others doing the same … I didn’t work with a team, I received no training. I only do gymnastics.”

In the video, Maedeh can be seen dancing while wearing a crop top, fitted jeans and a hat, missing the headscarf or hijab mandatory in Iran.

Following Maedeh's arrest, women in Iran have posted their own videos of themselves dancing using hashtags translating to #dancing_isn't_a_crime.

Blogger Hossein Ronaghi commented: "If you tell people anywhere in the world that 17 and 18-year-old girls are arrested for their dance, happiness and beauty on charges of spreading indecency, while child rapists and others are free, they will laugh! Because for them, it's unbelievable!"
