The demonetisation announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016, came as a massive surprise to the nation, as overnight, the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes widely in circulation became illegal tender.

The announcement was followed by protests across the nation as the public was forced to line in queues for hours on end so as to procure usable currency notes. Despite the troubles faced, the country slowly adjusted to the new currency and disappearance of the old. However, the demonetisation, coupled with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rendered a significant blow to the GDP of the nation.
