June 27, Wednesday, marks the 79th birth anniversary of one of the country's most loved and influential music directors, Rahul Dev Burman, fondly known as R.D Burman nicknamed Pancham Da. He was known for introducing upbeat and western music, he ruled the Bollywood music industry and gave Bollywood some really amazing melodies that we sing and dance to even today.

According to some reports, he was nick-named ‘Pancham’ because he used to cry in five different notes when he was a child.

He learnt his art from masters like Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Ashish Khan and made music that our country had never heard before. The son of music composer/singer, Sachin Dev Burman and lyricist Meera Dev Burman, he entered the music industry in the 1950's to the 1990's.

Slowly but surely Burman established his own stamp in the music industry and brought his own identity to his music and composed musical scores for 331 films. At a mere age of nine, he composed his first song;  Aye Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa and his father used it in the film "Funtoosh" (1956).

Burman has been credited with revolutionizing Bollywood music. He incorporated a wide range of influences from several genres in his scores. Burman's career coincided with the rise of Rajesh Khanna-starrer youth love stories. He made electronic rock popular in these popular love stories. He often mixed disco and rock elements with Bengali folk music.

Some of the beautiful songs of the most loved music director are Rhim Jhim Gire Sawan, Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na, Ane Wala Pal Jane Wala Hai, Mere Naina Sawan Bhado, O Mere Dil Ke Chain, Ek ladki Ko Dekha Toh, Tum Aa Gaye Ho, Aaja Piya Tohe Pyaar Du and so on.

On his birthday lets revisit some of RD Burman’s all-time timeless love songs.
