BJP candidate Dinesh Sharma campaigning door-to-door in Madhya Pradesh's Dhamnod town in Dhar district ahead of the upcoming civic body elections was left rather embarrassed when he was greeted with a garland of shoes.

Sportingly, Sharma after much hesitation accepted the garland of shoes.

"They are one of my own. There must have been something which upset him and he acted like that. We will sit together and talk. I am like their child," said Sharma regarding the incident.

In a video that has since gone viral, Sharma can be seen moving back when he is approached by an elderly man with a garland of shoes, but later he reluctantly accepts and even touches the feet of the man who placed it around his neck.

According to the man who made Sharma wear the garland, he wanted to highlight the acute water problem in the region.

"There's acute water problem. Had complained about it. Our women went to the then Chairperson to complain but a complaint was registered against them. They were called multiple times to police station even at night. So I did this," he said.

Last month, the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission had announced elections and by-elections for 19 civic bodies on January 17.
