Out of 53,000 cyber attacks in India, 40% of them were focused on the financial sector in 2017. This statistic puts us in the seventh spot in the list of targeted countries in Web Application Attacks, according to a report from Akamai Technologies.

Phishing, website intrusions and defacements, virus and ransomware were some of the security incidents targeted the Banking, Financial services and Insurances (BFSI) sector in India.

Akamai Technologies, who made this report, claimed the key motive of attackers has always been financial profit. Crypto-mining now offers attackers the most direct avenue to scam people. The report also stated frequency of attacks in the BFSI sector increased by 50 percent in the fourth quarter of 2017 from the last quarter.

The newly-released data that analysed more than 7.3 trillion bot requests per month found a sharp increase in the threat of credential abuse, with more than 40 percent of login attempts being malicious.

This indicates that DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks remain a consistent threat and the Mirai botnet is still capable of strong bursts of activity. The total number of DDoS attacks last quarter increased 14 percent from 2017.

The financial industry saw an acute increment in the number of DDoS attacks, experiencing 298 DDoS attacks against 37 distinct organisations last quarter.
