After the data-breach scandal with Facebook, Twitter is working on a ‘Secret' encrypted messaging feature which could make the microblogging platform safer for sensitive communications.

End-to-end encryption is a way of encoding messages, enabling only the authorised users, the person sending and the person receiving the message to read it. Even the company whose messaging platform is being used cannot read the messages. For instance, messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram use end-to-end encryption.

With this feature, Twitter is expected to roll out options about encrypted messaging like starting a secret conversation and viewing both sides of the conversation for encryption keys to verify a secure connection, TechCrunch reported on Monday.

The code for encrypted direct messages was discovered buried deep in the Twitter for Android application package (APK) by a developer, Jane Manchun Wong.

Developers often use APKs as a way to test out new features and Wong's tweet suggests that Twitter will be launching the secure messaging feature very soon.

Data-encryption issue has gained traction recently, with even WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum quitting reportedly "after clashing with its parent, Facebook, over the popular messaging service's strategy and Facebook's attempts to use its personal data and weaken its encryption".
