Many of us have experienced a problem with sleeping at one time or another. It is usually due to stress, travel, illness or other temporary interruptions to our normal routine. But if there are problems with sleep regularly, then surely one is suffering from sleep disorders.

A sleep disorder or somnipathy is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a person or animal. Disruptions in sleep can be caused by a variety of issues, from teeth grinding to night terrors. When a person faces difficulty in falling asleep with no obvious cause, it is referred to as insomnia.

Sleep disorders cause more than just daytime sleepiness. They can take a serious toll on your mental and physical health, leading to memory problems, weight gain and impact your energy and mood. There are many things you can do to get rid of improper sleep patterns.

  • Early Exercise. It’s no secret that exercise improves sleep and overall health. Researchers found that individuals who exercised at a moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes each morning, 7 days a week, had less trouble sleeping than those who exercised less or later in the day. The morning exercise seems to influence the rhythms of the body that affect the quality of sleep.
  • Warm Milk. You can rely on your grandma's natural remedy against insomnia of drinking warm milk before going to bed. Almond milk is an excellent source of calcium, which helps the brain to produce melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate the sleep/wake cycle that causes drowsiness and puts the body in sleep mode.
  • Sleepy-Time Snacks. The best foods that induce sleep include a combination of protein and carbohydrates, says Shelby Harris, PsyD. She is the director of the Sleep Behavior Medicine program at the Center for Sleep Disorders, New York. Harris suggests a light snack of half a banana with a tablespoon of peanut butter or a whole wheat biscuit with some cheese. Eating one of these snacks about 30 minutes before touching the hay can help one to regulate his sleep pattern.
  • Lavender Oil. Studies have proved that lavender oil is calming and can help encourage sleep in some people with insomnia. Try taking a hot water bath with lavender oil before going to bed as it relaxes the body as well as the mind.

Sleeping well is necessary for optimal health and can influence hormone levels, mood, and weight.
