World Championship: Kidambi Srikanth Beats Spanish Pablo Abian To Enter Pre-Quarter Finals

Indian badminton star and fifth seed Kidambi Srikanth outclassed Spain shuttler Pablo Abian in three gruelling games on Wednesday to enter in round 3 of the ongoing BWF World Championships in Nanjing, China.

World No. 6 Srikanth stunned his 48th ranked opponent with a score of 21-15, 21-12 and 21-14 in the second round contest which tested the skills of both players for a span of period of 62 minutes.

In the 1st game, the fifth-seeded Indian shuttler looked comfortable against the Spanish player despite a steady start till the first break with a score of 11-9, but after the break, Srikanth took the charge and sealed the 1st game with a score of 21-15 in just 18 minutes.

However, Pablo Abian started the 2nd game in an aggressive manner and also managed to gain a 4-point lead with a score of 11-7 till the mid-game break. The Spanish shuttler from thereon carried on his momentum and with some impressive shots went on to win the game with a score of 21-12 in 19 minutes to take the match into the decider.

In the 3rd and decider game, the match was evenly poised at one stage with a score of 6-6 and both the shuttlers were fighting for each and every point before the Spaniard took a lead with consecutive points to move towards the winning path with a score of 10-7.

However, after the final break, Srikanth shifted his gear and took the lead in the decider for the 1st time making it to 13-12 and from there on the Indian star displayed an array of smashes to wrap up the game and also his ticket for the pre-quarter-final match.

Up next, Kidambi Srikanth will now face Malaysia’s Liew Daren on Thursday for a place in the quarter-finals.
