As the US Open women's single tennis championship concluded with the finals on Sunday, American star player Sloane Stephens rose victorious becoming only the second unseeded woman grand slam champion.

Stephens defeated her close friend Madison Keys in the 2017 US Open finals by 6-3, 6-0.

"There is no words to describe how I got here," said the contented Stephens after winning the title. She said, "If you told someone this story, they'd be, like, 'That's insane'."

Earlier, Stephens had gone through a foot surgery and couldn't walk for months. After recovering from the operation, she made a promising comeback in the game. She was ranked among the 900s up to last month, due to her inactivity due to the surgery, which is guaranteed to come up to the top 25s after her stunning victory, said speculators.

Her friend and rival, Keys, who lost to Sloane in the finals expressed disappointment in her game while also praising the winner said, "Sloane is truly one of my favorite people and to get to play her was really special. Obviously, I didn't play my best tennis today and was disappointed, but Sloane, being the great friend that she is, was very supportive. And if there's someone I have to lose to today, I'm glad it's her."

It was a short game, only stretching up to 61 minutes, but Stephens' victory was clear from the very beginning. She had claimed the last eight games and as soon as Keys shot the ball on the net giving over the title, they both met over the net for a long hug.

Stephens was then presented her $3.7 million winner's check.

This was also the second time two women were making their Grand Slam final debuts in the Open Era.
