The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has announced Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi as its ambassador for responsible tourism on Monday.

"During my travels, I have had the opportunity to know other cultures and societies as well as other ways to see the world and this is very enriching, I am happy I can join this mission of promoting responsible tourism," said Messi in a statement released by the UN body after announcing his nomination.

This body has been set up to minimise the harm tourism can cause to the environment and historical sites. The UN body defines "responsible tourism" as tourism that "helps maximise the sector's benefits while minimising its potentially negative impact on the environment, cultural heritage and societies across the globe".

"Messi is a unique sportsman and an example of how willpower and constant work yield good results, it is a great honour to have him promote the positive values and benefits that tourism represents," said World Tourism Organization chief Zurab Pololikashvili.

Messi is a five-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner and is currently the highest scorer in the Spanish La Liga where his team FC Barcelona sits at the top.
