Real Madrid once again had to survive against surmounting pressure imposed on them at their home stadium at Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

After winning the first leg by 2-1, Real carried the aggregate advantage into the second leg, where a fired up Bayern Munich looked to extract revenge and take control of the tie.

But, Real earned the chance to win their third Champions League in a row after Karim Benzema's double strike and desperate last-minute defending gave them a 2-2 draw on the night and a 4-3 victory over the two legs of the semi-final.

"It's in the DNA of the club. We never stop fighting up to the very last minute, just as the Bayern players did tonight," said Zidane after the match.

The French coach also spoke highly of Benzema’s performance on Tuesday night, “He deserved to score, he has worked hard and he has never given anything less than his all. His game is always the same and he is always important for us. It was important for him that he scored tonight as well."

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes believed that his team played the best match they possibly could and were undone by a defensive lapse.

"We are very disappointed," Heynckes said. "My team played an outstanding game. I haven't seen Bayern play as well as that for years.  At this high level, you can't make the sort of mistakes we made after half-time."

Real Madrid who have won this competition 12 times are already the most successful team in the competition and will be facing the winner of Liverpool vs AS Roma in the final of the competition.
