Paris Saint-Germain spent $496 million this summer to bolster their squad and make them a real contender in the European scene. Unfortunately for them, luck wasn’t on their side as their star-studded squad bowed out of Champions League after faltering to Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Without their star Neymar who had a broken foot and was ruled out for six-eight weeks, PSG already were facing an uphill task with a 3-1 deficit in aggregate.

The first half was a spectacle of brilliant performances all around the pitch with serious pace. It was evident that intensity of this match from the get-go was high, and the teams were trying to gain some control over the game. Both teams had their shares of near calls but a goalless first half was ruled by the home side. They needed a breakthrough soon to overturn the aggregate and win the contest.

However, it was the Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo who broke the deadlock, by leaping highest to a Lucas Vasquez cross and take the lead. PSG came back with all their might, realizing that desperate times had come and the team needed to give everything they had. The colossal pressure did penetrate the Real defence finally, and the scoreline was level.

But, the wastefulness of Edinson Cavani, a red card to Marco Veratti compiled with lack of experience all round saw them cause defensive frailties. Casemiro’s deflected ping-pong shot went past the keeper and the tie was all but over in the 81st minute.

PSG will win the Ligue 1 title and arguably still are one of the best team in Europe, but a number of reasons have accounted for them to be faltered to the defending champions Real Madrid.
