AS Roma surprised the footballing world knocking out Barcelona in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. They overturned a three-goal deficit to win the tie on away goals.

Being 4-1 down in aggregate in the first leg, they won the second leg by 3-0.

Edin Dzeko set the ball rolling in the sixth minute, and after Daniele De Rossi converted a penalty 13 minutes after the break to get the home fans believing, Manolas glanced home a brilliant header with eight minutes left to send the Roma supporters into raptures and leaving Barca wondering what had hit them.

Roma started the game strongly, as they did in the first leg at Camp Nou. While they imploded then, as they conceded two self-goals, their offensive mindset reaped rewards at home.

Barcelona who are leading the Spanish La Liga and have one of the best-attacking players in the world on their roster looked a shadow of their former selves. They never got going in the game as Roma didn’t let them breathe with their constant pressure.

Try as they might, they were unable to mount anything significant, and AS Roma caused the biggest upset in Champions League this season by defeating one of the title favourites and advancing to semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Liverpool who led the tie against Manchester City 3-0 ensured their place in the semi-finals as well, winning the second leg 2-1. Premier League leaders Manchester City have now lost three consecutive matches. They have been eliminated from FA Cup and Champions League this season, after a promising start in both campaigns.

The semi-final will be held on April 13.
