Switzerland is through to the round of 16 courtesy a 2-2 draw in the last group stage encounter against Costa Rica on Wednesday at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Switzerland needed a point to enter the knockouts and they got it finishing second in Group E.

Costa Rica was playing for nothing but pride and started with confidence which they lacked in their first two games, that resulted in creating a number of opportunities in the early stages of the match.

Despite a bright start from Costa Rica, Switzerland took a first-half lead through Blerim Dzemaili's amazing strike into the nets.

Josep Drmic came up with a stunner in the 88th minute of the game to hand Switzerland 2-1 lead.

Switzerland thought that they had earned all three points before Costa Rica draws the level in the injury time added when Bryan Ruiz scored a penalty in the third minute of the injury time.

After the game, Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic said,"The round of 16 was the minimum objective that we set ourselves that we had to achieve. Now we can focus on our next opponent. It was a moment when I wanted to field my best players and make sure all of them play."

Switzerland will face Sweden in the knockouts at the Saint Petersburg stadium on 3rd July.
