Sri Lanka made history by becoming the first sub-continent nation to win a test series in South Africa when they clinched the second match by eight wickets at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Kusal Mendis became the man of the match and Kushal Perera won the man of the series trophy.

Despite having lost two wickets towards the end of play on Day 2, and being one batsman short, Mendis and Fernando were unperturbed.

Kusal Mendis and Oshada Fernando both scored half-centuries as Sri Lanka reached their target of 198 for victory in the slightly extended first session of play on day three.

They were barely tested by South Africa's bowlers on the third day, negating them with authority and positive intent.

Mendis reached his half-century in quick time, as did Fernando, and remained unbeaten on 84 and 75 respectively as Sri Lanka crossed the line in style with the former smashing Keshav Maharaj for a six to tie the scores, before a single to provide the finishing touches.

The pair added 163 runs in their unbeaten association that came off just 213 balls.

Brief scores: South Africa222 & 128 (Faf du Plessis 50*, Hashim Amla 32; Suranga Lakmal 4-39, Dhananjaya de Silva 3-36) lost to Sri Lanka 154/9 & 197/2 (Kusal Mendis 84*, Oshada Fernando 75*) by eight wickets.

Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka's series-winning captain said, "It's really a great feeling. Not easy when you come to South Africa and win a series. Lot of hard work, we did really well, enjoyed a lot and that's why we created history."

"I think the tours of New Zealand and Australia were really tough, we learnt a lot. The players wanted to do better for the team and for themselves. They realised what to do and what not to do, and that's why we are here," he added.
