Sanjay Manjrekar Urges Team Management To Tone Down Expectations From Dhoni As A Batsman

Legendary wicket-keeper and former Indian captain MS Dhoni is no doubt one of the best finishers in the cricket world but his bad form with the bat has raised concerns over his place in the Indian team.

After his poor show with the bat in England, and in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2018, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has reckoned that the team management needs to tone down expectations from Dhoni as a batsman and start looking at his replacements.

However, he added that Dhoni should play the 2019 World Cup for his wicketkeeping skills and the value he adds due to his experience.

Speaking to Cricinfo's show Sanjay Manjrekar said, "Absolutely but I have always said that at this stage Dhoni is not the world-beater that he was. Just bat him down the order, in Asia Cup final he should not have come ahead of Kedar Jadhav. Kedar is an in-form batsman, a pure batsman. Tone down your expectations from Dhoni the batsman."

Former Indian player also added that the Dhoni must be in the World Cup side if only to have a more experienced figure around Virat Kohli.

"He (Dhoni) is a good keeper stumping everything that comes his way, a reliable keeper. Virat Kohli needs a person around him, World Cup pressure around him, a man with all the experience but his batting is clearly a problem and if India have an exciting option to replace Dhoni then they should start looking at it,” he added.

MSD will be seen in action in the limited over series against West Indies, where he will have a chance to prove his worth.
