Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos was awarded the German Footballer of the Year for the very first time on Sunday as succeeded Philipp Lahm, who won the 2017 award ahead of Kroos.

Kroos received votes from 475 members of Germany's sports journalists' union and managed to get almost 5 times as many as Freiburg’s Nils Petersen who stood second.

The Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS), alongside football magazine Kicker, gave the midfielder 185 of the 475 votes cast to declare Kroos with the award for the first time in his career.

Toni Kroos played a key role for Real Madrid who went on to win third successive Champions League title by beating Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev in May, to add on UEFA Super Cup, Supercopa de Espana and Club World Cup titles claimed earlier in the season.

Speaking to media, Kroos said, "It is and always will be an honour to be the Footballer of the Year. This is a prize that is not easy to get, and not everyone gets."

Former Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes gained two more votes than Domenico Tedesco to win the Coach of the Year award.

According to media reports, Jupp Heynckes said, "I am very pleased that I have been voted Coach of the Year by journalists".

He further added, "My big compliment goes to those who did not vote for me because there are many good young coaches in the Bundesliga who also deserve this honour".

Toni Kroos had an ordinary outcome at World cup 2018 as he scored 1 goal, with 5 attempts on target, 1 shot from free-kick.

Meanwhile, Lyon's Dzsenifer Marozsan picked up the Women's Footballer of the Year award for the second time in succession after success in the Champions League.
