Premier League: Romelu Lukaku Shines In Manchester United's Comeback Win Against Chelsea

| February 26 , 2018 , 14:41 IST

Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku displayed his ability and silences critics at the same time with a well-rounded display against his former team Chelsea on Sunday. He scored one and made one in a 2-1 win for United against rivals Chelsea.

The evening started off on a wrong foot for the home side, as Chelsea dominated the early exchanges between the two teams. Spanish striker Alvaro Morata even hit the bar with a clean volley in the 4th minute, alarming the opposition defence with a warning sign.

Mid-way through the first half it seemed that United will be the team to score the first goal, as their waves of attacks were more potent. From Lukaku scuffing a shot to Alexis Sanchez not hitting a brilliant pass from Anthony Martial first time, the miscues were galore. In the 32nd minute, United paid for these mistakes.

A clever through ball from Eden Hazard to by-pass the defence to Willian who smashed it past David de Gea saw Chelsea take the lead. Both the United defence and the goalkeeper are culprits for this mishap, as defenders were found out by Hazard’s ball and de Gea who has been saving grace for United for years, couldn’t stop a shot going in from virtually underneath him.

Typically this season, United get flustered by a goal being conceded but they rallied themselves back into the game within minutes.

A decent link-up play between Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial and finally Romelu Lukaku, who shuffled his feet and his low shot went past his fellow countryman Thibaut Courtois. The first half ended with both teams level.

Changes were required from both sides to take control of the game. Both teams were even and needed brief moments of brilliance to make an impact on the game.

Paul Pogba, a player who has been in news for the wrong reasons, displayed a charismatic display showcasing skills of a world-class player.

In the 64th minute, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho played his wildcard. He took off Anthony Martial for Jesse Lingard, hoping this change of tactic will enable them to catch-out Chelsea. Martial and Lingard are two different players who play in the same position. Where Martial cuts in a to either pass or shoot, Lingard is given a free role to roam around the pitch.

This saw United take the lead after Lukaku held off Chelsea defence and chipped a ball in the penalty area. Lingard had made a run between the two central defenders and headed home to take lead.

This game was said to be the ‘best of the rest’ as either team’s chance of winning the Premier League title is minuscule given the lead leaders Manchester City have. But, that doesn’t mean defeating your arch rivals won’t be as sweet.

United are still second in the league and will carry the momentum of a phenomenal display of heart, will, and team-togetherness into their upcoming ties.
