Premier League: Lacklustre Manchester United Lose To Newcastle United

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United at the expense of a Matt Ritchie goal in the 65th minute. With this defeat, they now trail the leaders and 'noisy neighbors' Manchester City by 16 points with only 11 games to go. A gap which will require not only a herculean effort but also some divine intervention to be filled.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho and his counterpart at Newcastle United Rafael Benitez, have a history of jostling with each other. An opportunity to one-up has never gone missing and it was evident by the way Benitez set-up his team; defensively sound with counter-attacking prowess and pacy forwards. United have had this tendency to back-off and leave gaps in between their defence in set-plays, which was duly exposed. Jonjo Shelvey played a lobbed ball in the penalty area which was knocked down to Matt Ritchie to smash it home, leaving renowned Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea to be frozen on the spot.

The 'Red Devils' tried their all to get back in the game but due to woeful miss of Anthony Martial and suspect holdup play of striker Romelu Lukaku, the penetration in the final third didn't have enough girth to make any sort of considerable impact. Even superstar Paul Pogba was substituted at halftime to make way for captain Michael Carrick to bring some stability but the away record of the second placed team in the premier league remains to be a shadow to leaders Manchester City.
