Lakshya Sen Bags Gold In Badminton Asia Junior Championship

Lakshya Sen secured a gold medal in the title decider match of the Badminton Asia Junior Championship against Thai top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn on Sunday. He registered 21-19, 21-18 win in the match.

The sixth seed Indian player sealed the much needed 21-19 lead in the first half against the top seed. He continued his tremendous action in the second half too as he thrashed the Thai player 21-18 to secure the victory.

Lakshya surpassed Ikhsan Leonardo Immanuel Rumbay on Saturday to storm into the men's singles final of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships. He registered an easy 21-7, 21-14 victory in 40 minutes over fourth-seeded Rumbay.

The feat is only the second for India in the men's singles category since Gautam Thakkar's gold way back in the 1965 edition of the tournament. Sen previously won a bronze medal at the event in 2016. 

Lakshya's win in the final encounter made him the third Indian player to pocket a gold medal after Gautam Thakkar (1965) and P.V. Sindhu (2012) in the Asia Junior Championship.

The previous medal winners include Gautam Thakkar (Gold) in 1965, Pranav Chopra and Prajkta Sawant (Bronze) in 2009, Sameer Verma (Silver) and PV Sindhu (Bronze) in 2011, PV Sindhu (Gold) and Sameer Verma (Bronze) in 2012, apart from Sen himself in 2016 (Bronze).
