Khelo India School Games: Haryana Becomes The Champion With 38 Gold Medals

At the end of the Khelo India School games on Thursday, Haryana became the champion by winning 38 gold medals leaving Maharashtra with 36 gold medals and Delhi with 25 gold medals behind.

PM Narendra Modi launched the first Khelo India School Games of 2018  at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.The games will highlight India’s young sporting talent and showcase India's sports potential.

After an intense battle among the participating states and their athletes, Haryana emerged as champion with 102 medals total which included 38 gold, 26 silver and 38 bronze medals. Maharashtra came second with 110 medals while the host Delhi came third with 94 medals.

Haryana's wrestlers performed extraordinarily as out of 38 gold medals, 20 were won by wrestlers. They also bagged 16 silver and 16 bronzes medals for Haryana.

Haryana's players were in full flow on the final day as they won 42 medals. Apart from wrestling and boxing, Haryana also won the girl's hockey game. Haryana also begged gold in football as their girls beat Manipur girls 5-4.

The sports minister, Rajyavardhan Rathore, presented the Top State, Haryana, with the glittering trophy.

The trophies for maximum participation were awarded to Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan in that order.

As per TOI reports while talking about KISG, Vijender Singh, Beijing Olympics bronze medallist said "Khelo India has the potential to change the face of Indian sports. It's a very good initiative by the government and a step in the right direction. It will give a huge boost to India's Olympics aspirations."

Football star Baichung Bhutia said "Khelo India has the power to bring a significant change in the way sports is perceived in the country. The pyramid structure of Khelo India will have a strong and lasting impact at the grassroots level. It's important that we reach out to the kids and encourage them to go out and play. That's what Khelo India is intended to achieve. I am sure the concept will help to spot a good crop of fresh talent in greater numbers." according to TOI.
