ISL: Bengaluru FC Take On FC Pune City In First Semi-Final Of The Season

| March 7 , 2018 , 19:25 IST

Table toppers Bengaluru FC will travel to FC Pune City in first leg tie in the semi-final of ISL 2017-18 season. Even though they are favorites, complacency will not be in their books as they take a stuttering side in FC Pune City. The hosts only managed to secure two points from the last three games.

In the four-year-old tournament, this is the first time FC Pune City has entered the playoffs. Last season’s I-league winners Bengaluru FC also achieved the same feat in their first season.

Pune’s coach Ranko Popovic’s men registered nine wins, three draws and six losses this campaign — the same as FC Goa, who finished above them on the basis of a better goal difference.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru FC’s coach Albert Roca has relied heavily on the strike pair of Miku and Sunil Chhetri. The combined strikeforce has scored 24 of the 35 goals for the team. Along with that, they’ve only let in 16 goals in 18 games showcasing a tightly knit defence which more often than not is difficult to unravel. They also have experience on their side and players have had big-match experience before and have delivered when required.

This season the two teams met twice, with Bengaluru FC winning one and drawing the other.

But, stats go out of the window when the tournament reaches a knockout phase where past performances mean nothing if you can’t turn it up on the day it’s you and your opponent.
