IPL 2018: Kings XI Punjab Beat Chennai Super Kings As Gayle And Dhoni Shine

Chris Gayle once again showed his batting prowess as he powered his new team, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) to its second win in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

CSK won the toss and elected to field first at KXIP’s home ground in Mohali.

Scoring the second fastest IPL half-century, Gayle (63 runs of 33 balls) along with his opening partner KL Rahul (37 runs of 22 balls) ran havoc against the bowling line of CSK in the powerplay overs.

The duo slammed 96 runs in eight overs. But after their wickets, no other batsman took advantage of it and failed to score runs, thanks to the Chennai bowlers' disciplined bowling and settled for 197/7.

Chasing a mammoth total, CSK appeared to be flustered. Winning both their previous games with a narrow margin this season, CSK were on a backfoot to showcase their strengths.

Apart from Ambati Rayudu (49) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (79 not out), no other batsmen seemed comfortable in-front of Punjab's bowlers and went cheaply to lose the game.

Dhoni was at his finishing best as he played with bowlers and scored freely. Cramps affected his back and he could no longer create room to hit his shots. He still brought his side close to victory but his injuries curbed him from performing.

Big names like Shane Watson (11), Murali Vijay (12), Sam Billings (9) and Ravindra Jadeja (19) failed to score handsomely in a big run chase. Towards the end, Dhoni tried to pull off the things single-handedly but failed and his 44-ball unbeaten innings went in vain.
