IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir Steps Down As Delhi Daredevils Captain, Nominates Shreyas Iyer

In an unforeseen turn of events, Gautam Gambhir steps down as captain of Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday after the team suffers five losses in six games they have played in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Young swashbuckling batsman Shreyas Iyer has filled the captaincy void. Delhi is currently struggling at the bottom of the IPL table, having registered just one win in six matches under the leadership of Gambhir.

Delhi is tied with Mumbai Indians in terms of points, however, their net run-rate of -1.0 is way less that of the defending champions. Moreover, Gambhir's form with the bat hasn't been great either as he has struggled to change the fortunes of Delhi, something which he did exceedingly well during his time at Kolkata Knight Riders in previous seasons.

Gambhir made the cricketing world aware of his decision via a press conference on Wednesday.

"It was my decision. I haven't contributed enough to the team. I had to take the responsibility being the leader of the ship. I feel it was the right time." he said.

Having scored only 85 runs this IPL, Gambhir has struggled, getting out cheaply.

Gambhir’s return to his old stomping grounds was dubbed as a fairytale story but it has been the opposite of it for the Delhi camp who are looking to bounce back after yet another dismal start to the IPL season.

Gambhir is one of the most successful captains of the IPL history, has won two editions with his previous franchise in Kolkata Knight Riders.
