IPL 2018: Captain Shreyas Iyer Guides Delhi Daredevils To Win Against Kolkata Knight Riders

Newly appointed Delhi Daredevils captain Shreyas Iyer made a blistering start to a new chapter in his career as he won the first game leading the side in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League on Friday against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Iyer’s whirlwind knock of 93 runs in 40 balls along with excellent start given by Prithvi Shaw (62) and Colin Munro (31) helped Delhi post a mammoth total of 219 for four in 20 overs.

Batting like a possessed man, Iyer hammered young pacer Shivam Mavi for four sixes and a four in the last over of the innings as Daredevils collected 76 runs from the last four overs.

Iyer, who replaced Gautam Gambhir as captain, sent the ball soaring over the ropes 10 times and hit the fence thrice while Shaw hit seven fours and two sixes.

KKR fielders dropped Iyer twice and paid a very heavy price for the mistake. His innings overshadowed the tremendous work done by Shaw, who joined Sanju Samson as the youngest player to hit a fifty in IPL, aged 18.

Kolkata had a stuttering start to their innings as Trent Boult scalped two quick wickets in Robin Uthappa and Sunil Narine. Maxwell also sent high-scorer Chris Lynn back to the pavilion cheaply.

Even though KKR needed 80 runs off the last five overs and they had their power-hitting big West Indian Andre Russell at the crease, it was yet again DD who scalped important wickets at the right time to win the game by 71 runs.
